After visiting the property CEPI asked the owners if they could return for an investigation with CEPI members.
We have sine conducted a number of investigations in the property with varying degrees of activity.
Woodchester Mansion
Hidden in a secluded valley, untouched by time and the modern world, lies Woodchester Mansion, an unfinished masterpiece of Victorian building.
Designed by the brilliant young architect Benjamin Bucknall for the wealthy Catholic William Leigh.
Sitting on the foundations of Spring Park, the previous house that Leigh had demolished to replace with his own structure, the mansion was never completed. By the early 1870s construction workers and craftsmen mysteriously downed their tools and never returned. Rumours were that there simply wasn’t enough money to fund the rest of the building work, or perhaps there was something more sinister that happened? Perhaps we will never know.
Woodchester Mansion and the surrounding area is said to have many ghosts including a headless Roman centurion, a ragged dwarf, a black dog and a coffin that hovers above one of the estate's lakes!
Not only that but the ghosts of two WWII American servicemen have been seen walking in the park.
The area was occupied by the Romans, who built Woodchester's fantastic mosaic pavement, and American troops were also stationed in the area during the war.
CEPI have investigated Woodchester Mansion (Woodie) many times including a Charity event in 2006 - raising £1000 for Russells Hall Hospital.
